Patriotic anti-big-government taxpayers blast through the million protester mark

ABC News reports that two million Americans flooded D.C. in what people in the crowd were calling “a conservative Woodstock” Like the liberal Woodstock of the ’60s, thousands were rumored stranded on freeways. Some walked in to DC, ditching their cars and busses. I walked with a 5 deep 6 block long column of protesters from Pennsylvania Avenue who had walked miles from where they had to leave their busses. Networks including Fox News continued through the time I’m writing this at 8 p.m. local Eastern time reporting that “tens of thousands” showed up. Whasup with that?  When will we get some reliable reporting out of the corporate media types?

This event had been promoted as a taxpayer “tea party” but the crowd’s concerns were wide ranging, from outrage at ACORN and Obama’s socialist cadre known as Czars, to Obama’s untruthfulness. Protesters also displayed signs mocking Nancy Pelosi and others for smearing the grassroots movement as “astroturfers” and as an angry mob.

Thousands of protesters from all over the Southwest Florida area assembled today on the corner of Pine Ridge Road and US41.  Headed northbound after crossing over Pine Ridge, hundreds of patriots lined the edge of both sides of the street waving flags, carrying signs and waving to the passing cars honking their horns in support.

This event was a continuation of the summer protests at town hall meetings, where opposition to the president’s health care plan boiled over.  These attendees were not “radical right-wingers”, yet citizens sending a message to Washington hoping the Senate and Congress would recognize people are afraid of what’s taking place in our country.

The hand written messages on their signs told the story of an intense distrust with our government and the words extended well beyond healthcare reform. Some signs declared “Congress, are you stupid or what?”, yet another, “Please wake up and Save America”. Others said, “Our Constitution has termites”, “We are under attack by our own government”.

Many protesters said they oppose the bank bailouts last year, the outstanding legislation to take over the internet, Climate Change bill and many of the other pieces of legislation chipping away at our freedoms and liberties.

In speaking to a few of the fine patriots standing in the rain, each wanted to express the reason they felt compelled to be a part of expressing themselves on this day.  Some of the comments made why they were there:

-       Because  life without liberty isn’t life but mere existence

-       Because this could be one of the last free assemblies they could attend

-       Because there’s power in numbers to send this message

-       Because we need to get back to what our founding fathers intended for this country

-       Because they wanted to defend the Constitution

-       Because men and women have suffered and died for our rights to speak the truth and to have this freedom

-       Because everyone deserves the right to live the American dream

-       Because they don’t want their children and grandchildren to be slaves to a tyrant government

-       Because they don’t want themselves or their parents health decided by a Washington politician

-       Because they’re sick of Obama’s Acorn, SEIU, and extended corruption

-       Because they don’t want to serve or have their children serve in Obama’s civilian army

-       Because they love their country and want to celebrate it’s true greatness

-       Because they wanted to say no to an ever-expanding intrusion of government

Tea Parties started last April in opposition to President Obama’s policies and today’s rally comes just a few months after people began to declare Obama’s honeymoon period over. Just last week Obama’s speech to children caused immense controversy and many American’s said, “No”!  No more was one of the mantra’s today.

Last Friday, White House officials said they had no knowledge of the planned demonstrations across this great land and Gibb’s even went on to say he didn’t know who the group was.

And for all of you who were a part of this movement we started last April, it continues all across this great land. The message took root and has expanded, they have to stop…Congress needs to get back to the roots of America. These are not manufactured rallies. We cannot spend our way out of the deficit, get back to the roots of America and adhere to what our Constitution is and the framework of what our Founding Fathers laid out.

”Tea party” protesters are rallying their troops once again this summer and zeroing in on the Democrats’ health care legislation after launching a grass-roots rebellion nationwide against big government and taxes earlier this year.

Protest leaders say health care has risen to the top of their battle plans not only because of the massive costs of such overhauls but because the “government-run” legislation working its way through Congress encroaches on the freedoms of all Americans, as the political debate on the issue intensified last week, fueled by angry crowds at ongoing town-hall meetings hosted by members of Congress across the country.

“I think the health care issues symbolize what the great debate in this country is about, and that is the overreaching of government, what is the appropriate role of government, and at what point does excessive government regulations and control interfere with the freedoms and liberties of individuals and their families,” said Joe Wierzbicki, coordinator of the Sacramento, Calif.,-based Our Country Deserves Better Committee.

The group’s Tea Party Express kicks off a bus caravan on Aug. 28 and will host 35 rallies in cities and towns from coast to coast that will end with a taxpayer rally in Washington on Sept. 12 to voice their opposition to health care legislation that Democratic leaders are expected to move through the House and Senate following the August recess.

“We are also asking individuals to go out to these town-hall meetings and express their views and mobilize,” said Mr. Wierzbicki, whose organization was formed during the 2008 elections and now boasts 350,000 supporters.

The cross-country bus tour is being supported by many groups that have been active in the tea party protest movement, including FreedomWorks, the conservative advocacy group headed by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey of Texas, the National Tax Limitation Committee, and Tea Party Patriots.

Other organizations were conducting their own lobbying campaigns against the administration’s health care plan, including the Washington-based Americans for Prosperity, which has launched a Patients First bus trip that has been touring through Virginia, North Carolina, Nebraska, and other states. The buses are emblazoned with the campaign’s banner logo “Hands Off My Health Care” and officials said that hundreds of people have turned out at their stops.

Mary Ellen Burke, the spokeswoman for the group, said they also were urging their supporters to attend town-hall meetings in their congressional districts.

“These are real people who came out and care about the issues. They want their voices heard,” she said.

The American Conservative Union has sent out repeated e-mails to its members, providing a list of hundreds of town meetings that have been scheduled thus far by members of Congress, and urging them “to speak up and be heard on the issue of government run health care.”

“The response has been overwhelming,” ACU told its members.

Some groups, like the Club for Growth, are running TV ads in many states to mount pressure on Democratic lawmakers. One of the Club’s ads is targeting 16 House and Senate lawmakers, including one in Nevada that says, “If you oppose government-run healthcare, call [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid.”

The Tea Party Express caravan, which will include two 45-foot buses, several RVs and SUVs, and a moving van for additional equipment, will begin at a rally in Sacramento and head out across the country on 22-day tour of cities from Reno, Nev., to Bridgeport, Conn., before its Washington finale. Advance teams are promoting the rallies in each city, most of which are the hometowns of Democratic lawmakers who are considered vulnerable in the 2010 midterm elections.

“We’ll be running 30-second TV ads opposing Barack Obama’s health care plan as we go across the country to reinforce the message,” Mr. Wierzbicki said. “At the end of the day, most of the politicians in Washington right now are advancing an agenda that we believe is harmful to the country.”
